Last weekend brought some much needed success to Bentley’s North American racing program. Absolute Racing’s Adderly Fong scored two poles, a win and a second place this weekend in the Pirelli World Challenge. The race series was at Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI, for Rounds 5 & 6.
The Bentley Continental GT3 has alway performed well at Road America. I was there two years ago when Butch Leitzinger set a lap record in a three event weekend where Bentley scored a win and a couple of poles. Last year Fong was on the pole for both events.
Following on that success, Fong put down a qualifying time that bested the field by a tenth of a second. During Saturday’s race 1, Fong faced a tough challenge in the opening lap for the Cadillac ATS-V of Johnny O’Connell. After O’Connell contacted Fong and spun, the #88 Bentley pulled out in front of the field.
Fong would hold on for the win despite a late race charge by points leader and Porsche factory driver, Patrick Long. Long put good pressure of Fong but wasn’t able to gain an edge. Fong’s mistake-free race brought the hardware home for Bentley Team Absolute Racing.
Fong start Sunday’s race 2 on the pole based on his traffic-free fast lap from Saturday. At the start, Pat Long’s Porsche pulled ahead a half a car length. Carrying that edge into turns 1 & 2, Long cemented himself in first place for the race’s duration. Adderly Fong put on a performance equal to the previous race and held on for a second place.
Final points haven’t been added to the Drivers Championship, but we think Saturday’s win will put Fong into the top ten. Bentley is in sixth in the Manufacturers Championship slightly behind Audi.
Bentley Team Absolute Racing will be off for six weeks until the next Pirelli World Challenge race at Mid-Ohio on July 28th.
