Adderly Fong started out the weekend in ninth in championship points in a very competitive World Challenge field. Bentley Team Absolute was in fifth place in the championship and the team was looking for an improvement over a frustrating outing at the World Challenge’s previous event at Mid Ohio.
Fong qualified his #88 Bentley Continental GT3 in sixth position and upon the start was shuffled back after two leaders tangled, spun out and drew a full course caution. Fong had an amazing restart and was able to regain several positions leaving him in third went the race was slowed for its second full course yellow.
What followed was thirty minutes of really good racing in all classes. Porsche GT Cup was exciting and Frankie Montecalvo in the GTA class (amatuer) was able to run in fourth for several laps. Fong had his hands full in GT trying to get around the Acura of Ryan Eversley. Eversley has been on a tear lately and was very fast again, especially on the long straight away where the Acura was able to attain several more miles per hour than any other entry in the field.
It was Fong’s third and fourth podium of his rookie season. “The Pirelli World Challenge competition has been really tough. All the tracks have been new to me, so it’s been a long learning process. I think now, we’ve found a groove with the car and the team is gelling together,” said Fong.
The progress he has shown is remarkable as all of his podiums have come with Absolute campaigning only one car after the injury to Andrew Palmer and the withdrawal of a second car from the remainder of the season. The team will return to the World Challenge at Sonoma Raceway, September 16-18.
